POLICY #I35.0

INTERNET ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY AND USER AGREEMENT

35.1    The Internet is a global network of networks which has the potential to be a tremendous resource for students and teachers at all levels.  Our goal in providing this service is to promote educational excellence by facilitating access to information sources, improved communication and education innovation.

In order to access the Internet using the Clear Creek RE-1 server, you must have an assigned user account.  The use of assigned accounts is restricted to activities that: 1) support educational research, and 2) are consistent with the goals and objectives of Clear Creek School District RE-1.

You are personally responsible for complying with the terms and policies of this use policy and user agreement at all times, and are reminded that the use of the direct system is a privilege, not a right.  The School District may suspend or revoke, at its sole and absolute discretion, system use or privileges at any time for any student or staff member.

ANY incident of inappropriate use may result in immediate suspension of system use privileges, as well as school disciplinary sanctions, termination of employment, and legal action.  Please remember that any time you access the Internet through the district server, you are representing your school and Clear Creek School District RE-1.  We expect you to do so with integrity and maturity.

Please read the following User Agreement completely and carefully.  When signed by the student and, if appropriate, your parent or guardian, this document becomes legally binding.

Part I  Rules for the Use of Your Internet Account

1.   You are forbidden from sharing your Internet account or password with any other person.

Example:                  You give your password to a friend, who uses your account to send an obscene message.  Your friend loses access privileges for inappropriate use; you lose access privileges for sharing your password.

2.   You are forbidden to access any USENET newsgroups or other areas of the Internet that contain pornography; unethical or illegal solicitations; racism; sexism; or threats.

3.   Never use language online that is obscene, abusive, or harasses others.  This includes, but is not limited to, messages that indicate or suggest pornography; unethical or illegal solicitations; racism; sexism; or threats.

4.   There will absolutely no game playing through the district server at any time, and you are forbidden to download games from the Internet.  Use of this system for anything less than academic purposes will not be tolerated.  Offenders will be removed immediately and permanently.

5.   You are forbidden to access chat lines at any time.

6.   You may not download any large files, (e.g., graphics, video or sound files, or shareware programs) during school hours.  Downloading large files slows down the system and can bring it to a screeching halt.

7.   NEVER publicize the home address or phone number for yourself or others including students and teachers.  Be cautious about sharing any personal details through electronic mail.  If you need to list an address for any reason, use the following format: Your name, c/o Clear Creek High School, P.O. Box 3369, Idaho Springs, CO 80452.

8.      Unless expressly stated otherwise, all communications and information accessible via the network should be assumed to be private property subject to copyright and trademark laws, and should not be reproduced or transmitted to others without permission of the party who issued the information.

Part II  Core Rules of Network Etiquette

1.   Be considerate of the person receiving your message.  Never forget that the person reading your mail is a person whose feelings can be hurt.  Never mail or post anything that your teacher or parent would not approve of.  When in doubt, ASK.

2.   Follow the same standards of behavior online as you do in the classroom.  Don’t say anything that your teacher or parent would not approve of.  When in doubt, ASK.

3.   Respect other people’s time and cyberspace.  Follow a discussion group for several days to get the flavor of it before posting anything.  Always read the FAQ (frequently asked questions) document before posting.

4.   Take pride in how you present yourself and your school to others.  Be careful of your spelling and grammar.  If you make a mistake, apologize.

5.   Don’t point out mistakes in other people’s messages.

6.   Be forgiving of other people’s mistakes and share your knowledge.  Offer answers and help to other people who ask questions on discussion groups.  Practice good mentoring techniques; nobody likes the know-it-all who condescends to help the pitifully ignorant newcomer.

7.   Never read someone else’s mail or files.

8.   Be ethical.  This one speaks for itself.

9.   Please do not stay online unnecessarily:

*log off when you are not actively using the net

*log on and off quickly during peak hours

*only download files you actually need for research

Please be aware that only a limited number of users can access the system at any one time.  When the system is very busy, you may be denied access.  If you get the message the system is busy, please wait a few minutes and try again.

Part III  Electronic Mail

*Please remember that the district server is to be used for educational purposes only.  This limitation applies to all adult server users as well as to students.  Restrict your use of e-mail accordingly.

*Note that electronic mail and system use are not private.  System operators and district administrators have access to all mail and system transactions.  Moreover, these messages may be stored on disk and may be subpoenaed in court cases and legal conflicts, and may also be subject to review as a public record as provided by state law.  Accordingly, you should not use the system for private messages or for discussion of sensitive information.  The system operator may monitor messages.

Part IV  About Passwords

*Never use any of the following as your password – they are too easy to figure out:

1.      Any part of your name

2.    The name of a family member or pet

3.      Birthdays, social security numbers, or PINS (Personal Identification Numbers from bank or credit cards)

4.      Words that are easily identified with you (like hobbies)

*Make your password easy to remember so you don’t have to write it down.  If you do keep it written somewhere, make SURE that no one else has access to it.

*Use letters and numbers in your password, and mix upper and lower case.  For example, if you use the word “literature” as your password, spell it with numbers in place of some of the letters – “li5era5ure”, or “litERAture”.

*Change your password approximately once a month.
